As of November 1, The Advent of Evangelicalism: Exploring Historical Continuities edited by Michael A. G. Haykin and Kenneth J. Stewart is now available from B&H (formerly, Broadman and Holman).  In the UK, Inter-Varsity published this under The Emergence of EvangelicalismIt contains all of the same material, but is now available in the U.S. under this modified title.  The reason or the title change is largely due to the American associations with the word “Emergence” (this book is not about the emerging church).

This is a volume that looks at the historical origins of evangelicalism in light of David Bebbington’s 1989 thesis found in his Evangelicalism in Modern Britain: A History from the 1730s to the 1980s.  Chapters take varying positions, some calling for serious revision of the thesis.  I co-wrote a chapter on Edwards with Dr. Douglas Sweeney at TEDS, which has a more both/and approach.
