About Me

Who Am I?

My name is Brandon Withrow. I started my career as a professor at a small private university in Ohio, dreaming about the world I never saw because I was stuck sitting behind a desk grading papers. So I decided I needed a change, focused on journalism, and fell headlong into incredible world of travel writing.

Today, I’m an award-winning travel journalist and photographer. I’m a USA Today 10 Best travel expert, with bylines in BBC TravelBBC FutureNational Geographic, Travel+Leisure, Canadian Geographic, Wanderlust, The Daily Beast, Insidehook, Sierra Magazine, Adventure.com, Virtuoso, Matador, Cool Material, Business Insider, and others.

Stories I Like to Cover

I live to explore the world. My stories cover everything from global outdoor adventures to climate change and regenerative tourism to expedition cruises, cool stays, underrated cities, and cocktail bars. I love a story that is light and fun, like how to hitch a ride on a submersible in Antarctica, find love and pie at America’s biggest birding festival, or find great cocktail bars in Amsterdam or Vienna

I also love taking meaningful and deeper dives. Did you know that the Antarctic Peninsula is greening up (and that’s bad), or that kelp forests are disappearing off the California coast (also bad), or that Nebraska’s Sandhill Crane season benefits from the ancient practice of “good fire” (which is actually good), or that Indigenous tribes are reclaiming their stories through travel (definitely good)?

Travel should change us. They say you should leave a place better than when you arrived, but it’s also good when that place (like my pilgrimage to the Galapagos), leaves you better than when you arrived. Travel writing should be about truth-telling; it should also delight and surprise us.

Let’s Find That Story!

There are undiscovered and surprising stories still waiting to be told. Want to bring me out on a press trip? Need a consultant who can help you find the compelling story? Need someone to guide you into mind of journalist? Work with me.
